Our tips
- Europe's Christmas markets usually run from late November until just before Christmas — weekday evenings have the atmosphere without the biggest crowds.
- In Germany, hot drinks at Christmas markets often come with a mug deposit (Pfand) that you get back when you return the mug — or keep the mug as a souvenir.
- Carry a little cash for smaller market stalls, even though cards are widely accepted.
- Singapore's Chinese New Year highlights include the Chinatown light-up and street bazaar, lion dances in malls, and the River Hongbao festival. Many small shops close for the first two days of the new year.
- For New Year's Eve at Marina Bay, arrive several hours early to get a good spot along the waterfront.
