Tips for visiting Switzerland as a family
- Trains are the best way to see Switzerland — the rail network reaches almost every village, and the journeys themselves are part of the trip.
- Look at a Swiss Travel Pass if you'll be moving around a lot; it covers most trains, buses and lake boats and gives discounts on many mountain railways.
- Travelling with children? Ask about the Swiss Family Card, which lets kids travel free on most public transport when accompanied by a parent with a valid ticket.
- Zermatt is car-free — you arrive by train (usually via Täsch or Visp) and walk or take electric taxis in the village.
- Interlaken makes a good base for Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald and the Jungfrau region. Pack layers: mountain weather changes quickly, even in summer.
- Sri Lankan passport holders need a Schengen visa for Switzerland — apply well ahead of your travel dates.
